History

Ortur was founded in 2018 and, according to a report by Sir Apfelot, started with a 3D printer before the first laser engravers followed in 2019. With the Laser Master 2 (2020) and Laser Master 2 Pro (2021), Ortur became one of the better-known brands for open diode lasers; in 2021 the cheaper sub-brand Aufero joined with the Aufero Laser 1. The Laser Explorer app and the Laser Master 3 followed in 2022, and in October 2024 the partly enclosed H20 with camera, which was presented via Kickstarter. The devices are made by Dongguan Ortur Intelligent Technologies Co., Ltd.; the web shop is operated by SIMSON INDUSTRIAL CO., LIMITED in Hong Kong. Ortur does not publish figures on employees or revenue; according to a company profile, more than US$1 million was recently invested in research and development.

Customer support and warranty

Support is provided by email (support@ortur.net, technical support via support@ortur3d.com), contact form and live chat Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm Chinese time (UTC+8), which is morning to midday German time. There are also an official Facebook group and guides in the shop. The ortur.net shop is in English only but accepts euros; no EU warehouse is mentioned there, and devices from EU warehouses are mainly available through retailers and marketplaces. According to the shop, the warranty is one year, with returns within 30 days in the original packaging. On Trustpilot, ortur.net has 4.1 out of 5 stars from 123 reviews (as of October 2026); Ortur replies to all negative reviews, and the main criticisms are slow handling of returns and warranty claims as well as missing or wrong parts.

Environment and commitment

After public criticism, Ortur announced in July 2022 that it would release its firmware, which is based on the open-source firmware grbl, starting with older versions for devices from 2019 and 2020 (see criticism).

Criticism and problems

In July 2022, Hackaday reported that Ortur had twice refused to release the source code of its grbl-based firmware, even though grbl is licensed under the GPLv3, which requires it; Ortur initially called the code a trade secret. After the public criticism, Ortur announced it would publish the firmware gradually, but how completely this was done is not clearly documented. In its 2021 test of the Laser Master 2, All3DP pointed out that the advertised 7, 15 and 20 W describe the input power, while the optical power was, according to the manufacturer, about 1.5, 4.5 and 5.5 W. We are not aware of any recalls or official notices concerning Ortur devices (as of 10/2026).
