DTF (Direct to Film)

A textile printing method: the design is printed onto a film, sprinkled with hot-melt powder and then transferred to the fabric with the heat press.

Explained in more detail

A DTF printer prints the design mirrored onto PET film, first the colours (CMYK), then an opaque white layer on top. Hot-melt TPU powder is applied to the still wet ink and sticks only to the ink. Heat melts the powder; xTool gives 160 to 180 °C for 2 to 3 minutes for the oven. The transfer is then pressed onto the textile and the carrier film is peeled off. DTF holds without pretreatment on cotton, polyester and blends, light or dark, but needs powder, curing and extraction, and according to Sign Warehouse daily care of the white ink.

Where does the term come from?

English direct to film, "directly onto the film". The name distinguishes the process from DTG (direct to garment), in which printing is done directly onto the garment.

In practice

  • Suppliers' pressing figures vary widely, for example 110 to 177 °C and 10 to 20 seconds. Follow the instructions of your transfer supplier.
  • Fully cured transfers can be stored. Many people order them from service providers and need only a heat press themselves.
  • Fumes are produced during curing, and the fine powder can be inhaled. Do not place a DTF system in living spaces, and plan for extraction.
  • Wunderlabel recommends washing only after at least 24 hours and ironing only from the inside.

Not to be confused

DTF is not UV DTF: UV DTF uses UV ink to make stickers for hard surfaces such as glass or plastic and, according to suppliers, does not adhere to fabric. DTF is intended for textiles.

Frequently asked questions

Does DTF hold on cotton?

Yes, DTF holds on cotton, polyester and blended fabrics, including dark ones. With poor pressing, the layer can crack or peel at the edges.

Do I need a separate printer for DTF?

For your own transfers, yes: a DTF printer with CMYK and white, plus powder and a way to cure it. If you only press occasionally, you can order ready-made transfers from service providers and only need a heat press.
