LightBurn

A widely used program for designing and controlling laser engravers. It runs with many devices from different manufacturers.

Explained in more detail

LightBurn is layout, editing and control software for lasers that communicates directly with the device's controller. The Core licence (99 US dollars) supports G-code based controllers such as GRBL, Marlin and Smoothieware, typical for diode lasers. The Pro licence (199 US dollars) additionally supports DSP controllers such as Ruida, TopWisdom and Trocen, which are found in many CO₂ lasers, as well as galvo controllers. Both licences are perpetual and include one year of updates; after that, renewal costs 40 US dollars per year. The software runs on Windows and macOS, and there is a free trial.

Where does the term come from?

The name is made up of the English light and burn. The program is developed by LightBurn Software LLC from the USA.

In practice

  • Before buying, check which controller your device has: GRBL devices need Core, while Ruida CO₂ lasers and galvos need Pro.
  • Create a separate setting for each material in the material library, including power, speed, passes and line interval.
  • With the test grid function you find the right values faster instead of guessing.
  • Some devices only work with the manufacturer's software or only to a limited extent with LightBurn. Check this in the compatibility list.

Not to be confused

LightBurn is not design software for 3D models and not a slicer. For 3D printing you need other programmes.

Frequently asked questions

Is LightBurn free?

No, there is a free trial period, followed by a one-off licence. Core costs 99 US dollars, Pro 199 US dollars, and updates after the first year cost 40 US dollars a year.

Do I need LightBurn Core or Pro?

Core is enough for GCode machines, which means most diode lasers. You need Pro for DSP controllers such as Ruida in CO₂ lasers and for galvo machines.
