PLA+ (PLA Plus)

A PLA that the manufacturer advertises as improved, usually as tougher and less brittle. What exactly is different is defined by each manufacturer.

Explained in more detail

PLA+ is not a standardised material designation but a name suffix used by manufacturers. They usually promise higher toughness and impact strength than standard PLA, and in some cases better layer adhesion or a smoother surface. Manufacturers generally do not disclose the formulation. The print temperatures are given on the spool and are usually in the range of PLA. Similar suffixes such as Pro or Tough mean different things depending on the brand, and only the values in the technical datasheets can be compared.

Where does the term come from?

The plus is not a standardised term but a name suffix with which manufacturers label an improved variant of their PLA. There is no uniform definition.

In practice

  • Compare datasheets: impact strength, elongation at break and heat deflection temperature say more than the name.
  • Start with the temperature from the spool and check it with a temperature tower.
  • For parts that get warm, look at the heat deflection temperature in the data sheet: the plus alone says nothing about heat resistance.
  • Dry and store as with normal PLA.

Not to be confused

PLA+ is not a plastic of its own but, according to manufacturers, a PLA with a modified formulation. One brand's PLA+ can differ considerably from another's.

Frequently asked questions

Is PLA+ better than PLA?

It is often somewhat tougher, but that depends on the manufacturer. For decoration and figures, normal PLA is usually enough, and for parts that must withstand impacts it is worth checking the datasheet.

Does PLA+ need different settings?

Usually only slight adjustments to the temperature. The figure on the spool takes precedence, and a temperature tower is worthwhile for every new type.
