UV printing

Nozzle check

A short test pattern that shows whether all nozzles of the print head are working cleanly. Missing lines mean that nozzles are clogged.

Explained in more detail

The printer prints a stair-step or grid pattern for each colour channel, in which each nozzle draws its own short line. Missing or crooked lines show clogged or deflected nozzles. Remedies are the printer's cleaning function, flushing with cleaning fluid or cleaning the capping station. A nozzle check belongs at the start of every printing day and after every cleaning. On a dark surface or film, white lines are easier to see than on white paper.

Where does the term come from?

The term is a translation of the English "nozzle check", from "nozzle" = Düse. In printer menus it can also be found as nozzle test.

In practice

  • Keep the first test of the day and compare it with later ones; this shows whether a channel is gradually getting worse.
  • After two to three unsuccessful cleanings, take a break instead of cleaning further; this saves ink and protects the head.
  • Crooked or doubled lines point more to dirt on the nozzle plate, and missing blocks to air in the line.
  • During longer breaks, do a nozzle check or a small print at least once a week.
  • Before a holiday, print a test and keep it. After you return, shake the white, clean and compare with the old test.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you run a nozzle check on a UV printer?

At the start of each print day, after every cleaning and before important runs. When idle, at least once a week.

What should I do if lines are missing in the nozzle check?

Start with a light clean and then test again, moving to the stronger level only if needed. If that does not help, clean the capping station and wiper according to the instructions or ask customer service.
