History

According to the investor relations page, the company was founded in Utah in June 1969 as Provo Craft & Novelty, Inc. and renamed Cricut, Inc. in March 2018. Under the name Provo Craft, the company sold the first Cricut plotters, which initially worked with physical cartridges; in 2017 these were replaced by digital cartridges, and in July 2018 the older Cricut Craft Room software was shut down, so Design Space has been the only official software since. Provo Craft sued the providers of the third-party software Make-the-Cut and Sure Cuts A Lot at the time, and both ended Cricut support after settlements. On 24 March 2021 Cricut went public on Nasdaq (ticker CRCT); around the time of the prospectus, revenue of around US$959 million was stated for 2020. According to Wikipedia, revenue in 2025 was around US$709 million with about 690 employees; in September 2026 the Maker 5 and the StickerPix sticker line were added.

Customer support and warranty

Cricut runs a German shop (cricut.com/de-de) with free shipping from €50, a help site (help.cricut.com) also in German, live chat and a German phone number (0800 000 8389), plus product documentation and declarations of conformity. The German warranty statement for the Cricut Joy (as of 12/2022) specifies a two-year manufacturer's warranty from the date of purchase against defects in material and workmanship; Cricut decides between repair, replacement or refund, blades, accessories, software and materials are excluded, the warrantor is Cricut, Inc. in the USA, and no EU entity is named in it. According to the warranty text, statutory rights against the seller remain unaffected. Whether the warranty is the same length for all devices was not checked for every model. On Trustpilot, cricut.com has 1.8 out of 5 stars from 1,022 reviews (as of October 2026), 81% of them 1 star, mainly about early hardware failures, missing repair and spare part options, Design Space errors and subscription cancellations; according to Trustpilot, Cricut replies to 99% of negative reviews.

Criticism and problems

No recalls or official notices concerning Cricut devices found (checked by searching CPSC and GOV.UK). The biggest documented point of dispute was the limit of 20 free uploads per month in Design Space for users without a Cricut Access subscription, announced in March 2021; after protests and a petition, the CEO apologised and Cricut withdrew the plan. Other criticisms are the dependence on the cloud software Design Space, the discontinuation of older cartridge devices through the shutdown of Craft Room 2018, and earlier legal action against third-party software. The very low Trustpilot rating points to problems with durability and customer service, but is not representative of all buyers.
