Cutting plotter not cutting properly: blade, mat, pressure
are explained briefly when you hover over or tap them.
When a plotter does not cut cleanly, the cause is almost always one of four things: blade, mat, material setting or software. Work through them in this order and make a small test cut after each change instead of cutting the whole design straight away.
Quick overview
| What you see | Common cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Cut does not go all the way through | wrong material selected, too little pressure, dull blade | Check the material, increase pressure, clean or replace the blade |
| Edges frayed or torn | dull or damaged blade, blade depth too high | Replace the blade, reduce depth and pressure, cut more slowly |
| Cut goes through the backing | too much pressure or blade depth | Reduce pressure, choose a different material in the software |
| Material slips or ripples | mat no longer sticky, material not pressed down | Clean or replace the mat, press the material down flat |
| Heat transfer vinyl cannot be weeded | vinyl inserted the wrong way round | Shiny carrier side down, mirror the design |
| Print then Cut cuts off-centre | not calibrated, light interferes with the sensor | Calibrate the machine, change the light source |
| Machine does not respond | connection, software or account | Re-establish the connection, check the software |
Blade: wear, cleaning and replacement
A blade gets duller with every cut. The manufacturers do not give a fixed number of cuts, but signs to look for:
- Cricut: Replace blades when the cut quality drops or after 6 to 8 months of regular use. According to Cricut, exactly how often depends on how you use it.
- Brother: Replace the blade when cuts become rough or the edge is dull or chipped. If the blade does not cut evenly even with higher pressure, Brother says it is probably chipped.
- Silhouette: It is time for a new blade when performance drops. According to Silhouette, the Premium Blade is meant to last three times as long as the standard blade.
Before you replace it, it is worth taking a look at the blade. Fibres and adhesive build up, especially with cardboard and adhesive vinyl. Silhouette advises unscrewing the cap and removing the residue with a lint-free cloth or cotton bud. Never cut without the cap screwed on.
A replacement Premium Fine-Point Blade for Maker and Explore costs €13.99 at Cricut (RRP, as of 16.10.2026). According to Cricut, it fits the gold Premium Blade housing and the silver Fine-Point housing. According to the manufacturer, new Cricut machines come with either a metal housing or the new cutting tool, so check what is fitted in your machine before buying.
Mat: stickiness and cleaning
According to Cricut, a mat that no longer sticks is often the real reason for slipping vinyl, torn paper or shifted fabric. How you clean it depends on the manufacturer, and the advice contradicts itself:
- Cricut (green, blue, purple): Wipe light dirt away with alcohol-free wet wipes without lotion, oil or fragrance. For heavy dirt, clean with a few drops of grease-cutting washing-up liquid and a soft sponge, rinse thoroughly and leave to air dry, not with a towel.
- Cricut FabricGrip (pink): No water and no soap. Remove lint with tweezers and lift off residue with transfer tape.
- Silhouette: Rub with your fingers under lukewarm water, without soap or cleaning agents, and leave to air dry, with no towel and no heat.
Follow the instructions for your mat. Cricut advises against third-party adhesive sprays or glue sticks, as they can void the warranty and damage the machine.
To make the mat last longer: put the protective film back on after each use, store it flat and choose the right grip for the material. With Cricut, LightGrip (blue) is intended for light paper, StandardGrip (green) for cardstock, vinyl and heat transfer vinyl, and StrongGrip (purple) for heavy cardstock, magnetic sheet or faux leather.
Replace the mat if cleaning does not bring back the stickiness, if deep cut grooves make the material slip, or, according to Silhouette, if the corners no longer lie flat and interfere with feeding.
Pressure and material setting
Most cutting problems are solved by choosing the right material in the software. First check that your material is really selected there.
- Cricut Design Space: After the test cut, in the step before cutting you can choose More or Less for pressure if the material was not cut through or was cut too deeply.
- Silhouette Studio: Increase the force first, then the blade depth. According to Silhouette, a blade extended too far gets dull faster and cuts with frayed edges. The aim is the lowest combination of depth and force that cuts cleanly. If that is not enough, an additional pass helps. For frayed cuts, reduce depth or force, or cut more slowly.
- Brother ScanNCut: The auto blade sets depth and pressure itself, and you can adjust both by hand.
If you need your own values for a vinyl from another maker, the vinyl manufacturer’s data sheet helps. For P.S. Film (EasyWeed), for example, Siser gives a 45° blade angle, 60 g cutting pressure and 30 cm/s. These values refer to cutting plotters with adjustable force in grams and cannot be transferred 1:1 to the levels in Design Space.
Always cut heat transfer vinyl with the shiny carrier side down and mirrored. If the vinyl is the wrong way round, the blade cuts into the carrier instead of the colour layer, and the design cannot be weeded. More on this in Cutting and ironing on heat transfer vinyl.
Test cut
A test cut costs a few centimetres of material and often saves a whole sheet.
- Silhouette: Click “Test” in the Send area. The machine cuts a small square with a triangle at the top left. For a second test, move the blade to a different spot with the arrow keys, and never cut in the same spot twice.
- Cricut: Cricut recommends a test cut to check the selected setting, for example with cardstock, and then, if needed, setting the pressure to More or Less.
After the test, check that the lines are clean and cut all the way through. With vinyl, only the vinyl should be cut through and the carrier should stay intact.
Print then Cut cuts off-centre
- Calibrate: Cricut and Silhouette require calibration for accurate cutting around printed designs. With Cricut you will find it in the Design Space settings under the machines. Print the calibration sheet at original size and in black and white.
- Light: According to Cricut, direct sunlight or a lamp pointed at the machine can interfere with the sensor.
- Same session: Cricut advises printing and cutting a Print then Cut project in the same browser and on the same computer. A sheet saved as a PDF and printed outside Design Space has sensor marks of the wrong size.
- Printer setting: Switch off options such as “Fit to page”, otherwise the size changes.
- Silhouette: The design must not extend into the hatched corners, otherwise the machine cannot read the registration marks. If it cannot find the marks, you can move to them manually and register them.

Connection and software
Cricut: According to Cricut, Maker 5, Explore 5 and Joy Xtra need a device with Bluetooth and a fast internet connection. The Joy Xtra has no USB port and works only via Bluetooth. According to Cricut, the system requirements change, and the current list is at cricut.com/systemrequirements. Knife Blade projects run only on a computer, not via iOS or Android.
Silhouette: If the machine starts cutting by itself after being switched on, according to Silhouette another USB device is trying to communicate with it, usually an old printer driver under Windows. If it pauses for a long time in the middle of a cut and the power light flashes, it is receiving too much data. In that case remove everything that lies outside the cutting area.
Brother: The ScanNCut also works on the touchscreen without a computer. It has a USB port for storage media, which lets you transfer files to the machine even without a network. Brother has discontinued the web version of CanvasWorkspace, and the PC version now uses the same account as Artspira.
In general it often helps to restart the machine and the app, place the device closer to the computer and, if possible, use the USB cable instead of Bluetooth. If none of this helps, contact the manufacturer’s support.
