xTool X1

First impression from Nadin (2 days of testing on site, test unit) I spent two days at the regional shop in Gedern (Hesse), which as an xTool host already has the X1 on site, and tried it out there together with Sascha and Katharina: Katharina operated the device, I watched and helped test. It was a test model, not a production unit, and the software was still in beta. My honest first impression: the X1 is not intuitive, and the instructions are rather poor. That may be partly down to the beta software. Above all, the module change with calibration and the question of which laser suits which job with which settings were not self-explanatory. A module change took us about 8 to 10 minutes, the calibration afterwards around 30 minutes. Having to test and experiment with a laser is normal. But using only the presets from the software, I did not get good results everywhere after two days: the device does not take the manual work off your hands. When engraving a coin with a 3D depth effect (depth map), the device often showed a defocus error. We measured 73 dB at 1 m distance, while engraving a coin with the AP2 air purifier on its highest setting. There was only a slight smell in the room with acrylic, none at all with wood and metal. The frame consists of just three die-cast parts and arrives fully assembled.

The X1 can be viewed in advance with xTool hosts, for example at the regional shop in Gedern (Hesse). Book a demo (no affiliate link)

Pros and cons

Pros

  • 55 W CO₂ for cutting and 20 W diode galvo for fast engraving in one machine
  • Galvo area of 615 x 320 mm, much larger than typical galvo lasers
  • can be expanded later with UV, MOPA and fibre (laser swap)
  • Pass-through (AutoPassthrough) for workpieces up to 299 cm long
  • several lasers can be combined in one job, e.g. engrave with diode and cut with CO₂, without touching the workpiece

Cons

  • 60 kg, two people needed to set it up; with laser module at the back (backpack) around 74 cm deep, with the lid open around 90 cm high
  • Galvo and expansions only with the variant including the diode module (€3,959), each further module costs €1,979 to €3,169
  • No fume extraction included, according to xTool the air purifier costs about €1,000 extra; operation, module changes and calibration were not very intuitive in the first test
