UV printing product ideas: what sells

Business & costing4 min readUpdated: 10/2026

are explained briefly when you hover over or tap them.

A UV printer prints on almost anything that is flat enough or can be rotated. That makes the choice wide and the decision hard. Here you will find typical products with their material, effort and pitfalls. Whether a product pays off for you depends on purchasing, time and demand. Nobody can promise you that in general terms.

A short look at the individual groups

Metal posters and photo prints: A big eye-catcher with a comparatively simple process. On white-coated aluminium you often do not need white, but on bare or brushed metal you do, depending on the effect you want. More under Printing on metal.

Signs: Door signs, house numbers, practice signs. For outdoors, you have to judge durability realistically and communicate it.

Acrylic stands and key rings: These are often printed from behind so that the design sits protected behind the acrylic. The design then has to be mirrored, and the colour order is reversed.

Phone cases: Many models, many shapes. Without a suitable holder, positioning becomes laborious. Soft cases need flexible ink, otherwise the print cracks.

Drinking bottles and cups: Round parts need a rotary fixture or have to be printed in sections. Tell your customers clearly that they do not belong in the dishwasher. More on this in Printing on round objects.

Ballpoint pens and promotional items: Small area, little ink, but a lot of set-up effort. Worth it if many identical parts run in one pass. A custom holder (for example lasered or 3D-printed) is almost a must here.

Puzzles, tiles, golf balls: Niche products with their own pitfalls. Good for personalisation, but test adhesion and blanks thoroughly before you offer them.

This is only an overview. For specific questions, legal advice helps.

Rights to designs: Print only designs to which you hold the rights or for which a suitable licence exists. This applies to photos, illustrations, fonts and patterns from the internet. For customer designs, have the customer confirm that they hold the rights. The basics of licences such as Creative Commons are in our article Licences and selling.

Trademarks and characters: Logos, club crests, film and game characters are almost always protected. Even if a customer explicitly asks for it: without the permission of the rights holder, a sale can become expensive.

People: Photos of people may only be used with their consent. For customer orders, this usually lies with the customer; ask if in doubt.

Product safety: Anyone selling products in the EU must ensure they are safe and must give manufacturer details on the product or packaging. Since December 2024 this has been governed by the EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR). Additional rules apply to certain products, such as toys or parts with food contact. A puzzle for children is legally something different from a decorative sign. Do not print on surfaces that come into contact with food unless the ink is expressly approved for it.

For business use

  • Start small. Mastering two or three products properly is better than twenty halfway.
  • Test blanks. Order small quantities and check adhesion and dimensional accuracy before buying in larger amounts.
  • Calculate unit costs. Labour time and the blank often determine the price more than the ink. See What does a UV print cost?
  • Include care instructions. Saves complaints. You will find suitable wording under Durability.
